Tips from the Kitchen

Ready, Set, Start Seeding

Whether you’re a first-time gardener or experienced fanatic, gardening can provide health, financial, and environmental benefits. From a community standpoint, gardening can increase a sense of stewardship by bringing neighbors together, fostering a community identity, and enhancing the curb appeal of residential areas. In addition to that, growing crops in a garden can benefit your wallet by reducing the amount spent at the grocery store or at other food retailers.

Now, in terms of health benefits the list goes on and on. Gardening encourages families to adopt a more nutrient-rich diet by introducing more fresh produce. Scientific studies have further proven that exposure to green space alleviates stress and anxiety. I personally experienced these therapeutic benefits when I started growing herbs in my backyard. Among the herbs I grow are parsley, basil, marjoram, dill, and chives. They are relatively easy to grow and make a great addition to salads, soups, and other dishes. The Process:

Purchase a bag of fertilizer at your local home improvement store. Prices will start around $4. Next, decide what herbs you want to grow. Take into consideration your local climate and the sustainability of plants in that region. Fill a few planting pots with 8-9 cups of fertilizer, then place the seeds in dirt according to the depths specified on the package. Place the containers in a cool dry place that receives a moderate amount of sunlight and you’re all set!
